Lighter Introduces Lighter EVM Rollup for Cross-Chain Interoperability
On February 1, 2026, Lighter launched Lighter EVM, an EVM-equivalent rollup developed in collaboration with Axiom using OpenVM technology, designed for native interoperability with Lighter's existing Layer 2 infrastructure.
Technical Architecture
Lighter EVM introduces several innovations:
- EVM equivalence — full compatibility with existing Ethereum smart contracts and tooling
- OpenVM framework — leverages Axiom's zero-knowledge virtual machine for proof generation
- Native bridge — seamless asset transfers between Lighter's orderbook L2 and the EVM rollup
- Shared sequencer — both chains share ordering infrastructure for atomic cross-chain operations
Why an EVM Rollup?
Lighter's original L2 is optimized for orderbook trading but uses a custom execution environment. The EVM rollup complements it by:
- Developer accessibility — Solidity developers can build on Lighter without learning new languages
- DeFi composability — standard EVM contracts can interact with Lighter's trading infrastructure
- Ecosystem expansion — enables lending protocols, vaults, and other DeFi primitives to integrate with the exchange
Axiom Collaboration
Axiom brings expertise in ZK proof systems. The OpenVM framework allows Lighter EVM to generate validity proofs efficiently, ensuring security without sacrificing performance.
Implications
The dual-chain architecture positions Lighter uniquely in the market — a high-performance orderbook chain for trading, paired with a general-purpose EVM chain for the broader DeFi ecosystem. This approach could attract both traders and developers to the Lighter ecosystem.
